St Andrew Station - Elevator Construction
Update: Elevator installation - expected completion by early 2012
The TTC is committed to making its services accessible in order to better meet the needs of seniors and people with disabilities in the City of Toronto.
Work for street level to subway platform elevator service at St. Andrew subway station began in late-April 2010. We look forward to full implementation of the elevators at this station by early 2012.
Extent of Work
St. Andrew Station is being retrofitted with two (2) elevators, complete with closed circuit television and intercoms, and an accessible fare gate. (Power assisted swing doors currently exist in this station).
Details
Elevator #1 - Presently, a “platform lift” exists in the glass pavilion structure at 145 King Street West located at the south east corner of the University/King intersection. The “lift”, which requires security assistance for use, will be replaced with an elevator that will provide access between street level and the unpaid area of St. Andrew Station concourse level.
Elevator #2 - Will be located in the paid area in station concourse. It will provide access between the concourse level and the subway centre platform. Construction of the elevator shaft will require some work at street level that will take place in the southbound traffic lanes of University Avenue, just north of King Street.
Work Hours
The majority of the work will be conducted within the station with some work at street level. Work at street level on University Avenue will require lane restrictions/reductions and will be confined to nights on weekdays; 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., and on weekends; 11 p.m. Friday through to 6 a.m. Monday. The night work at street level will be undertaken periodically during the early stages and latter stages of the project.
Traffic Restrictions
During some weeknights and some weekends, the lanes of University Avenue will be temporarily reduced to one southbound lane and two northbound lanes between Adelaide Street and King Street to accommodate work for the construction of an elevator shaft. The traffic lanes will be fully reinstated by 6 a.m. on weekdays.
Pedestrian Access
The west sidewalk on University Avenue will be maintained at a narrower width due to the contractor’s compound being located on the west side of University Avenue north of King Street. The east sidewalk adjacent to the glass pavilion structure at 145 King Street West will be secured off, but a temporary alternate accessible pedestrian route will be provided.
Station Access and 145 King Street Access
Access to and from the subway station will be maintained during the work. The entrance to the pavilion will be maintained during the working hours of 145 King Street West. All work areas will be separated from public areas with proper partitions and barriers.
Transit Service
St. Andrew Station will remain operational during construction. Work at street level will not affect 504 King streetcar service.
Contractor’s Compound
The contractor’s compound for material and equipment storage will be located in the vicinity of the work areas.
We regret any inconvenience that may be caused as a result of this project.
